Thoroughly cleaning a spray bottle after using a cleaning solution is essential, but many people may not understand why. Residue left inside can clog the nozzle and react with the next ineffective solution. Lastly, make sure to avoid using cleaning solutions that contain bleach or ammonia as those can damage the bottle and make it unsafe to use over time.
First, get rid of as much as possible of the current contents in the spray bottle. Make sure the spray bottle is completely empty by holding the bottle upside down. Now, try filling the spray bottle with warm water, put the spray nozzle back on, and shake the bottle for about 30 to 60 seconds. Make sure to rinse and shake the bottle 2 to 3 more times to get as much debris out of the bottle as possible. If the bottle is narrow, you may need to use a brush to reach the sides and get all the gunk out.
One of the most neglected parts of the cleaning process is the nozzle, and yet, it is the part most likely to develop clogs. Take the nozzle off the bottle and soak it in warm, soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes. This soaking time is crucial for loosening dried or caked-on residue that could be blocking the spray opening. Once that’s done, use a small brush, or a toothpick, to clear the nozzle opening and debris that may be obstructing it. Spray bottles containing anti-clogging filter ports should have the filter removed and cleaned separately for optimal spray performance. Once cleaned, the nozzle should be rinsed under warm water and set aside to air dry completely.
Suppose the spray bottle was used for cleaning chemicals, liquids such as food and cosmetics, and strong cleaning solutions. In that case, it is a good practice to disinfect the bottle. To disinfect your spray bottle, mix one part vinegar and four parts warm water. Fill the spray bottle with the mixed solution, shake, and spray until all the cleaning solution is out of the bottle. Let that solution sit for about ten to fifteen minutes, and then dump it out. Finally, rinse the bottle with some warm water, and you'll have a disinfectant free spray bottle. This works well with food and cosmetics as vinegar is a disinfectant that is safe to use.
DO NOT, for any reason, use strong disinfectant solutions as it can react to other products, and can also damage the container the spray bottle is made of.
To prevent mold and mildew from forming in your spray bottle, it needs to be completely dry. After the last rinse, dry the bottle upside down in a clean towel in a towel holder. Take off the nozzle, and dry it with a clean cloth to ensure moisture has not gotten trapped. For faster drying, shake the bottle to remove excess water, or, if your bottle permits it, take a clean dry cloth and wipe the inside. Storing a bottle while damp is not okay, and moisture will leads to odor and degradation of the bottle's and harsh conditions of the spray nozzle’s. After the bottle is completely dry, you can put the bottle back together and store or use it immediatily.
